This was stated by one of the company’s vice presidents in an interview.
Andrew Bell, Nvidia’s Vice President of Hardware Engineering, gave an interview to Ars Technica, where he revealed that the company not only has no plans to stop production and sales of its Shield TV set-top box but may eventually introduce a new generation.
According to him, sales of the device have remained stable for many years: roughly the same number of people buy a Shield TV every week, which is why the company continues to experiment with formats and concepts.
Bell said that if Nvidia finds “something that inspires them,” they will likely release a new device. He mentioned that such a set-top box would guaranteed support for AV1, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision standards.
The Nvidia Shield is one of the longest-supported Android gadgets in history: released in 2015 on Android 5.0, it still receives updates on Android 11. While new major Android versions haven’t been released for the box recently, other patches continue to come out.
